Goalkeeping has been in the Shuk family since the early 1980s. My younger brother was the first to play the position. We laughed that he started by using gloves that could double as gardening gloves or something that you might change a flat tire with. A few years later I made the change from striker to ‘keeper and have never looked back since.
As we reflected on those days of high glove prices and limited technology, we lamented how expensive it was for a family to keep two youth ‘keepers equipped with proper gear. Gloves wear out quickly, palms lose grip, and the dreaded odor of old gloves can make for problems. Glove prices have shot up from $40 for top-end models in 1983 to current gloves pushing $250 a pair. I was lucky enough to play at a level where most of my equipment was free and I could grab new gloves fairly quickly. Reality hit our family harshly as both of our children chose to become goalkeepers.
Having to keep two goalkeepers from youth to college in new gloves all the time became expensive. As a former professional goalkeeper, I knew how vital it was to have proper gloves all the time, so my solution was to create a glove company that could solve this issue for everyone. I am currently coaching club, college, and USL goalkeepers as a Goalkeeping Director of a large youth club, the Michigan Olympic Development Program’s Girl’s GK Director, and The USY ODP Regional Goalkeeper Coach for both boys/girls in the Midwest Region. Our company, Shuk Goalkeeping prides itself on offering professional-level gloves at a price point that allows families, clubs, and teams to keep their goalkeepers in match-quality gloves without spending an enormous amount of money.
How do we do it?
We do not have the overhead that the big brands do. We are not paying players to wear our gear. Yes, we get asked to “sponsor” players, but that cost would have to be transferred to our customers. We also limit our style selection. We try to make what we feel is the best glove to serve the majority of our goalkeeper base. We never sacrifice our palm’s materials, our palms are “4mm German Latex”.
